This online memorial was created in memory of our great friend Thor Hesla who was killed on January 14th, 2008, in an attack by the Taliban in Kabul, Afghanistan.
1/16/2011 A New Note From Maren on the Audacity of Nope
Four years ago, Thor sent an email to several of us with this subject line the day after the New Hampshire primary. He was a huge Hillary supporter, and was just delighted by her unexpected triumph in the granite state, and by the fact that Obama wasn't going to waltz into the nomination. For those of you who don't remember, Obama's biography was titled "The Audacity of Hope" -- making Thor's line exceptionally funny and brilliant and succinct -- everything we expected from him.
I really am trying not to memorialize January 14, because the last thing I want to remember about Thor's life is his death. But we're coming up on the 4th anniversary, and I know this group is probably thinking about him -- especially in light of the ludicrous Republican field -- as much as I am. So I thought I'd send out this little reminder of what we all loved.
Go Ron Paul.
Thor's dad, David, has put together his thoughts. Find it here
Warning Re Email Scams - Unfortunately the site's Guestbook seems to have been harvested by scammers and many posters have received inappropriate emails. The most common of these is the so called "Nigerian Scam." I won't go into detail here, but please be on guard for any emails you receive from unknown parties asking for or offering funds. If you get such a message and are unsure as to its authenticity, feel free to forward it to us for review.
One note about this that is either sad or funny, depending on your frame of mind - about 5 years ago when the "Nigerian Scam" was at its peak, it accounted for nearly 15% of that country's GDP. If you want to learn more than you need to know about this, a Wikipedia story is located at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigerian_scam
WIKIPEDIA ENTRY We have a Thor stub! Now we need someone comfortable with Wikipedia to flesh it out. Building a good Wiki is a bit of a pain – we can help provide source material. If you are up to the task, email Howard to coordinate.
FACEBOOK MEMBERS Thor's many friends in Kosovo have created a "group" within facebook where photos and condolences are also posted. The group is called In memory of our dear friend THOR HESLA. Now, no invite is needed!
In lieu of flowers the Hesla family asks that donations be made in Thor's name to Doctors Without Borders.
Please sign Thor's guest book and let us know you came to visit. Then, email us any photos, video or other memorabilia you would like to share with his family & friends.
